The settings I change in the first ten minutes

June 29, 2026 · Mikkel Sørensen

I have a habit now: before I really start a game, I open the settings and make a few changes. It takes two minutes and it fixes most of my early complaints before they happen. Here's the routine.

First, sound. I lower the music and keep effects up, because game music loops fast and gets grating on a small speaker. Second, the frame rate or graphics option if there is one, which I tune based on whether I want smoothness or cooler hands. Third, control layout, since a lot of games let you move buttons and the defaults rarely fit my thumbs.

I also look for a haptics toggle. Constant rumble drains battery and gets annoying, so I usually turn it down to key moments only. And if there's a colorblind or high-contrast option, I glance at it even if I don't need it, because it often improves readability for everyone.

None of this is dramatic, but it's the difference between a game that fights you and one that fades into the background so you can just play. Spend the ten minutes.
