Why turn-based RPGs are the best commute companions
A commute is a hostile place for reflex games. You get interrupted, the connection drops, someone needs to squeeze past. Turn-based RPGs solve this by design. Nothing happens until you act, so you can pause between stops without losing a fight.
The genre also respects one-hand play. You're tapping menus and choosing moves, not swiping across the whole screen. That makes it comfortable when you're standing and holding a rail with the other hand. Emberfall Chronicle became my go-to for exactly this reason.
The catch is battery over long trips, since an hour of any game adds up. I keep brightness low and take advantage of any battery-saver graphics setting, which most modern RPGs hide somewhere in the options. It buys a surprising amount of playtime.
If you've written off RPGs as too much of a commitment for a phone, try one on your next commute. The stop-start rhythm of turns fits the stop-start rhythm of travel almost perfectly.
